🎥Movie Review 🖋️ — ‘96
’96 is a breezy musical romantic drama written and directed by Prem Kumar. It is a perfect flawless debut as a director for Prem Kumar and he had used all the possible opportunities in this film to prove his potential and capability in making a cult classic romantic drama. It is a month of blockbusters in Kollywood as back to back Super Hits are hitting the screen on a row and 96 will definately top up the list for its unique style of storytelling.
It will certainly give you the heartwarming experience of visualising the journey of emotional pure love. Ironically, most of the intense love stories will revolve around the male protogonist with little scope for the female lead but 96 film is quite different and it has broken all the stereotypes to give an all new fresh experience of watching a perfect love story. I’m sure 96 movie will join the elite club of “Premam Lovers”and infact it will be a new tamil version of intense emotional love story in the recent times.
Vijay Sethupathi as K. Ramachandran (Ram) and Trisha as Janaki(Janu) justified their roles with flawless acting. It is very rare to see a perfect pairing like Ram and Janu in Tamil cinema. Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha pairing look fresh on screen and their chemistry really helped the director to connect with the audience to transfer the emotional blocks straight to their hearts. Their unconditional love during the school days was perfectly scripted by the director and hats off to Aditya and Gouri who played as little Vijay Setupathi and little Trisha. It is a visual treat to watch all the cute moments on screen and both played their career best performance in this romantic drama.
There are quite a lot of emotional scenes without dialogue in this movie which will certainly catch your attention from the beginning till the end. We have seen Vijay Sethupathi as a witty sarcastic black comedy hero but this film will show his romantic side and once again he did it with ease and especially in the second half there are so many cute moments where he scored well on screen. Undoubtedly, it is Trisha’s career best performance and surprisingly in few scenes she even surpass Vijay Setupathi with her expression.
She had shown all the emotions with her expressive eyes and it is a perfect come back movie for Trisha. All the friends characters are picture perfect and notably Divyadarshini and Bhags roles are treat to watch. Not sure how they identified the picture perfect childhood artists for all the lead and supporting characters. Kudos to the director for extracting the acting ability from all the supporting characters and hats off for his impeccable writing as we could able to relate the characters with our real-life throwback memories while watching the film.
Music composed by Govind Menon who is the lead violinist for Thaikkudam Bridge. Govind shown his masterclass in RR and BGM. The emotional content in this film is elevated through the back ground score. Govind must be a great fan of Raja and he had used all the best Raja melodies in the flashback scenes. Yamunai Aatrile song plays an important part in the entire film. All the songs are sung by Chinmayi and she also played a crucial role in dubbing department.
Trisha’s emotions are highlighted well with Chinmayi’s romantic voice. Shanmuga Sundaram is the man behind the camera who captured the flawless emotions of Junior Vijay Setupathi and Junior Trisha. First 5 mins montage shots will set the tone for the audience that it is going to be a beautiful emotional journey for the next 2 hours. The emotional battle in the second half between Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha was beautifully captured with perfect lighting.
Kudos to editor for the neat cuts in the first half. The film travel back with the memories and you don’t feel the strain while transforming from present to past and vice-versa. Some may feel it is quite dragging towards the end but the director wants it to be slow for the audience to feel the emotion and digest the scene frame by frame.
Don’t miss this breezy romantic flick!!
